Sashe Ivy is the founder and CEO of Pink Hard Hatz Construction. PHHC is a certified DBE vendor with IDOT, Metra, Pace, and CTA, working on their MBE, WBE, and other federal government agency certifications. PHHC is licensed, insured, and bonded.
This minority female-owned and operated construction company specializes in residential /commercial services in Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana.
PHHC brings value-added construction services to their customers by creating a successful partnership and working diligently with their clients throughout the process. They attempt to establish lasting relationships with their clients through precision, punctuality, and professionalism.
Since its inception, Pink Hard Hatz Construction has been making incredible strides in the construction industry. Sashe stated, “I officially started my business four years ago, but I have been in the real estate and construction industry for well over 15 years.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women combine just under 11% of construction workers.
“This giant corporation put in place roadblocks to stop small businesses like mine from growing. Owens Corning is claiming the word PINK in my brand’s name and color is a LIKELIHOOD OF CONFUSION to consumers with their trademark,” Sashe said.
In 2022, Owens Corning sales were $9.8 billion, employing 19,000 in 31 Countries. Owens Corning develops, manufactures, and markets insulation, roofing, and fiberglass composites. A Fortune 500® company for 68 consecutive years.
“It is irresponsible and irredeemable for a company like Owens Corning to litigate against a small african american woman-owned business,” Sashe said.
Sashe states, “Owens Corning has DEI (Diversity Equity Inclusivity) policies that claim to support women-owned businesses on their website. How do they implement that policy? They are stifling the growth of my business which is a small minority-owned and operated training and employing women in a white male-dominated industry. Owens Corning’s actions towards Pink Hard Hatz Construction feel very selective.”
Owens Corning logo is a PINK Panther. The PHHC logo is 2 Pink Hammers, a White building, and 2 white houses with the words Pink Hard Hatz outlined in white with a pink construction hat and white construction spelled out with a black background. “There is no likelihood of confusion at all, Sashe said.
PHHC is a general contractor dedicated to the service and construction industry. Sashe stated, “We do not sell or manufacture roofing or insulation material.
They took a consumer pool with the two brands and logos with 125 consumers 1 white male stated yes to a likelihood of confusion. Sashe expressed, “Many companies in the roofing and construction industry use the word PINK in their name. Why is Owens Corning targeting Pink Hard Hatz Construction? “There is a white female roofing company using PINK in their name.”
Sashe feels Owens Cornings will continue to bully small minority-owned companies because they have enormous resources and money.
“They could have used this time and money to promote and amplify the voices of marginalized communities, but instead, choose to suppress them,” Sashe said.
She is convinced businesses like Owens Corning are not the kind of companies that contractors should look to represent the construction industry standard. Sashe also believes their actions and views are offensive to small minority-owned businesses.
“PHHC is already facing an uphill battle in almost every corner of the construction industry. Sometimes, this is what comes with success being a woman-owned construction firm,” Sashe said.
Today, PHHC has a training program with the Metropolitan Family Service helping women to learn construction trades. Sashe is suggesting more resources and information should be available to help women advance in the trades.
Looking forward, Sashe plans to bring more women into the trades, especially electricians and plumbers. “I am going to be taking PHHC nationwide. Pink Hard Hatz Construction should be in every state,” Sashe said.
