On a sunny afternoon, Saturday, July 27th, the vibrant community of Englewood came together to celebrate at the annual outdoor festival hosted by the Nazarene All Nations Church. The event took place at the church’s location, 6500 S. Ashland, Chicago, IL.
Bishop Sherman Butler, the senior pastor, played a pivotal role in organizing this festive gathering, marking 33 years of tradition and community involvement. The event featured a rich tapestry of cultural performances, delicious food, and engaging activities for all to enjoy.
From the start, Bishop Butler served as a street minister, faithfully walking the streets and delivering powerful messages to the people’s ears.
In the 1990s, Bishop Butler, Sr. formed a Gospel Youth Band (“The Nazarene Band – Instruments of Praise”) and in 1999, the “Instruments of Praise” received a nomination for the “Prestigious Gospel Music Award.”
“We need to bring the message of Jesus to the people in this community. Many of them have never set foot in my church, and it’s our responsibility to go out and bring them in. There was a lady that I testified to, whose son was shot seven times in the back. It’s heartbreaking – she had just buried him. It’s incredibly sad and it touches my heart. I feel for her. We met so many that came in from the streets.”
However, this annual outdoor festival held every year for 33 years is all about reaching the surrounding community.

“Even though I preach in many different churches, my ministry isn’t confined to the church building. I often minister right on the streets. I recently met a lady who told me she’s living in the alley behind our church. We need to figure out how we can help her.”
Today, Bishop Butler came out to connect with numerous members of the community. They came for a short while and left, but their presence made a lasting impact.
