Stacey Woodruff shares his journey to becoming CEO and Director of Woodruff Funeral Home, 16774 Dixie Highway, Hazel Crest, IL 60429. His story is a testament to hard work and perseverance.
“I’ve been involved in mortuary science since 1995. My aunt Flossie Smith, a small and petite first lady, married to the founder of my church, introduced me to the field. I worked hands-on with her on the west side of Chicago, where I learned the importance and value of this profession,” explained Stacey.
He ultimately went to college and completed the mortuary science program at Malcolm X College. According to Stacey, his Godfather, Samuel Morrow inspired him to go into business.
“During my apprenticeship at AA Raynor and Sons Funeral Homes, Samuel a limousine driver there, inspired me to start my business. In 2003, Sam told me that if I ever start my business, you can work alongside me,” Stacey said.
Stacey acknowledges that everyone’s journey is different when starting a company. His ability to network with people and treat them with dignity and respect is a positive approach. Stacey had excellent mentors who educated him on the ups and downs of the funeral business.
Woodruff Funeral Home provides a range of services including traditional funerals, memorials, transportation, cremation, embalming, and burial services, all tailored to meet the unique needs and preferences of each family they serve.
Woodruff Funeral Home is licensed in eight states – Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia.
Jarell Blakey expressed, “The Woodruff team was amazing from the beginning of the process until the end, Mr. Stacey and the Woodruff team were compassionate and very helpful. They did a wonderful job preparing our loved ones. She looked amazing! I can’t say thank you enough.”
During the pandemic, families wanted to send their deceased relatives back to their native land. Woodruff Funeral Home went above and beyond by chauffeuring several families out of state.
“We can ship the deceased anywhere in the continental United States. In the past, we shipped loved ones’ remains to Africa, Europe, and South America.”
“My children are the next generation, continuing with the family business. All three of my kids Ebony, Alexia, and baby girl Courtney are interested in this field. However, Alexia a recent graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science looks forward to a fulfilling career here at Woodruff Funeral Home,” explained Stacey.
In the future, Stacey has plans to expand the business as the second generation takes over. He envisions constructing a crematory and a cemetery for the community as well.
Socially, Mr. Woodruff is a part of the Hazel Crest Chamber of Commerce and supports local churches in his community. He helps foster strong relationships between the community and funeral homes.
“I go the extra mile to find other facilities for loved ones to conduct a service. I do my best to search and network for families during difficult times. We make the connection for them. I emphasize the need for families to set up prearrangement.”
It is imperative to be proactive by establishing prearrangements, according to Stacey. Having a plan in place to deploy the appropriate resources when it comes time to inter your loved ones is crucial.
“Pre-planning is a thoughtful decision that helps reduce the stress of indecision and uncertainty when a death occurs. It can give the person you love peace of mind to know that they have acted following your wishes. I hate to see people running around like headless chicken. My team of professionals are available to listen, advice, and guide you through all your options.”
