Peer Plus’ Annual Chat & Chew 2025

On Sunday, June 1st, Peer Plus Education & Training Advocates held their annual Chat & Chew Celebration In Honor of The 38th National Cancer Survivors’ Day.

The event occurred at Boursdeau Griffin Interiors, 8237 S. Princeton Avenue in Chicago, Illinois.

Masters of Ceremony were Dr. Karriem S. Watson, CEO – Ul Health Mile Square Health Center, and Dr. Tonya S. Roberson, Community Psychologist – at Governors State University.

The more than 300 attendees were treated to a delightful meal, which included a variety of dishes such as collard greens, rotisserie chicken, salmon, pasta, fruit, salad, cupcakes, and complimentary drinks.

The highlight of the event was an inspiring keynote speech delivered by Alfred Lacks Carter, Jr., the grandson of the legendary Henrietta Lacks. His presence brought a profound connection to her remarkable legacy and the impact it continues to have today.

HeLa cells are durable and prolific, allowing for extensive applications in scientific study. The line is derived from cervical cancer cells taken on February 8, 1951, from Henrietta Lacks, a 31-year-old African American mother of five, after whom the line is named. Lacks died of cancer on October 4, 1951.

“I believe individuals have received Nobel Peace Prizes for their work involving HeLa cells. After my mother passed away in 2009, just two days after Mother’s Day, I promised her that I would continue her work. I am determined to preserving Henrietta’s legacy because if we don’t, no one will. It is our responsibility as a family to take charge and ensure that her legacy is preserved properly,” Alfred said.

He is Deborah Lacks’ enthusiastic son. As a WHO goodwill ambassador, he works diligently to eliminate cervical cancer by raising awareness and encouraging change in communities worldwide.

Additionally, Alfred works diligently to promote the importance of health intelligence, organ donation, and clinical trials. His 501(C)3, “Henrietta Lacks House,” is a boots-on-the-ground organization determined to save lives and continue his grandmother’s legacy. He is an author, actor, and advocate for underserved communities.

Peer Plus’ Annual Chat Chew was a great success, with attendees and vendors remaining highly motivated and engaged throughout the celebration.

In closing, Phyllis L. Rodgers, Founder and CEO of Peer Plus Education & Training Advocates, stated, “Today is much more than I ever expected. It’s about bringing positive energy to those who are thriving. We must all fight and thrive, as we never know what tomorrow may bring. In honor of National Cancer Survivors’ Day, we thank 316 Magazine for being here with us today.”
