Pastor Huford Norwood 1st Scholarship Gala

The Huford Norwood 1st Scholarship Gala Charity, a highly anticipated and widely celebrated event, took place on Saturday, June 22nd at the distinguished Kasey’s Banquet Hall in Lansing, Illinois, attracting a diverse and enthusiastic crowd eager to support a noble cause.

History

The charity was born out of the heart of Pastor Norwood’s oldest daughter, Nikia Norwood-Wheaton, who sought to share her father’s legacy with young adults as they embark on new chapters in their lives. With the blessing of his wife, of 55 years Mrs.Genevia Norwood, Nikia made this dream a reality, ensuring that Pastor Norwood’s spirit of service would continue to touch lives.

The Pastor Huford Norwood Charity was established in 2023 with a mission to empower youth and young adults from all walks of life to achieve their academic goals. This mission is driven by the same passion, love, and patience exemplified by the late Pastor Huford Norwood. His legacy of love, service, and mentorship continues to inspire all who knew him.

Nikia Norwood-Wheaton shared with attendees how people approach her asking for assistance. “Can I get a scholarship? First off, my daddy was a pastor. So number one, you must be active in church.  And if you are interested go to the website: www.phncharity.com and find out more information.”

His widow, Mrs. Genevia Norwood stood by her husband’s side through every challenge and triumph over 55 years.

“My mother’s love, her strength, and her dedication were the pillars that allowed my father to pursue his calling. They created a home filled with faith, love, and commitment to serving others. My mother was the type to pray about everything. Mom, your partnership with my daddy in both life and ministry has been an inspiration for all of us. Tonight as we gather in this beautiful space, I am overwhelmed, elated, and blessed. I still cry a lot, but I’m going to keep moving forward,” confessed Nikia.

Pastor Wheaton, in closing, said, “For almost 90 years, he gave freely of himself. He gave unconditionally and sacrificially. And tonight, we pause to say thank you! The world is a better place because Pastor Norwood came this way. We are better people because of him. God, we thank you tonight for what he deposited in our lives, the legacy that lives on even after you have rewarded him with rest. Now, God, bless this family. As we pray, we sincerely thank you for Mama Norwood.”

Overall, the event was a great success with friends, family, and local businesses coming together to support this year’s recipients: Iyana Carpenter,  Angelis Pierce, Nathan Smith, and Nikyra Wheaton.
