MSB Dance Cuts the Ribbon on Its First Permanent Home
On Saturday, September 19th, at 11 AM, Movement Strengthens Balance Dance Ensemble — better known as MSB Dance — officially opened the doors to its first permanent studio at 2738 W. 111th Street in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood community. The ribbon cutting was not just a milestone. It was the culmination of a decade-long dream.
A Vision Years in the Making
Brazhal Brewer, founder and Dance Director of MSB Dance, started dancing at age two and began teaching children at 11. For more than a decade, “Ms. B” has been building something far greater than a dance program — she has been building a movement.
“Our goal has always been bigger than teaching dance steps,” she said. “We want young people, particularly those growing up on the South Side, to have a place where they can build confidence, discover their talents, develop leadership skills, and know that they belong. Opening our own permanent studio represents a major milestone in that journey.”
Getting there required extensive planning, financial sacrifice, renovations, flooring installation, mirrors, painting, and countless hours of support from family, staff, parents, and community members. Every detail of the new studio reflects the commitment that has always defined MSB Dance.
A Program Built for the Whole Child
MSB Dance serves youth ages 3 to 16 and offers instruction in ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, modern, African, lyrical, and gospel dance. The program is designed not just to develop talented performers, but to nurture disciplined, creative, and empowered young people.
“Our dancers may enter the studio to learn choreography, but they leave with so much more,” Ms. B says. “They learn how to show up, work through challenges, support one another, and recognize their own abilities. MSB is more than dance. It is a movement.”
The Opening
The celebration brought together families, dancers, local leaders, and community supporters for studio tours, raffles, and performances from the Chicago Bucket Boys and the King College Prep Jaguar dancers — a fitting tribute to the energy and talent MSB Dance has always championed.
For a Black woman-owned youth arts organization serving Chicago’s children, the new studio is more than four walls and a dance floor. It is a permanent home for possibility.
