Chicago, IL – A number of African American ministers are holding a press conference 9:45 a.m., Friday, May 23rd, at the historic Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church, 2401 S. Wabash Ave., to defend Mayor Brandon Johnson who is under attack by Trump’s U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for hiring too many Blacks.
The DOJ launched an investigation against Johnson after receiving complaints about his boasting about hiring an unprecedented number of Blacks in his administration when he spoke last /Sunday at the Apostolic Church of God.
Flipping the script, the Black ministers are calling on the DOJ to investigate Trump’s alleged race-based hiring practice they feel is overwhelmingly white. They want to know who are working for Trump, their titles, duties and their ethnicity.
They are also calling on the DOJ to investigate Trump’s brining in white Afrikaners as refugee farmers while deporting people of color. Without any vetting, Trump was shocked to learn not one of the South African guests was a farmer. Black ministers want DOJ to investigate that.
“Trump needs to look in the mirror on this question of violating the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion that he has banned but in fact he is practicing that same principle but for white folks only,” said the organizer of the event, Chief Apostle William McCoy, co-chair of the National Action Network, under the leadership of Rev. Al Sharpton.
McCoy is also working under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Michael Eaddy, pastor of the People’s Church of the Harvest Chicago, Maureen Forte, president of the Chicago Chapter of the National Action Network, and Dr. Wallace. “Gator” Bradley, minister of Social Justice under McCoy.
Insulted that Trump’s DOJ has launched an investigation into Mayor Johnson’s alleged “race-based” hiring, McCoy and Eaddy have issued a clarion call for all ministers to attend Friday’s press conference.
“We support Dr. Eaddy’s clarion call to stand in unity behind Mayor Johnson who is hiring qualified people unlike Trump who has hired unqualified white people some of whom have made very serious breaches of national security hat have even been labeled by some Republicans as “rookie mistakes.”
McCoy asked why Trump is going after a Black mayor, who is a Democratic, for his hiring practices. “The late Mayor Richard J. Daley was criticized for hiring his relatives but told critics to ‘kiss the mistletoe.’
“We are asking DOJ to investigate Trump’s apparent race-based hiring practice, and we want a full report,” said McCoy. “People power is more powerful than political power,” he said. “We stand united behind Mayor Johnson.
Rev. Dr. Eaddy said the DOJ’s investigation is flawed because the Mayor made his statements on. Sunday afternoon and by Monday morning, DOJ had announced an investigation. “What is the basis of their investigation that the Mayor hired too many Black people?” he asked.
“If that is so, we want the DOJ to investigate why Trump is hiring so many white people,” Eaddy said. “If we are going to be calling for DOJ investigations, then Mr. Trump has an entire cabinet that looks exactly just like him, and nobody is raising one opposition to that. Past mayors were never subjected to DOJ investigations because they hire people who look like them,” said Eaddy.
“I believe that Mayor Johnson is being targeted. It is politically motivated in an effort to intimidate the Mayor. The faith community in the City of Chicago is saying that is not acceptable and is totally out-of-line.” Source Chinta Strausberg, Editor 3:16 Magazine
