Free, Packed, and Phenomenal: Bishop Bernard McKenzie Hosted 12th

On Sunday, June 7th, Acme Baptist Church at 8747 South Paulina Street in Chicago was filled to capacity with gospel music lovers dressed in their Sunday best — and not a single ticket was purchased to get in. That is exactly how Bishop Bernard McKenzie planned it.

Now in its 12th year, Bishop McKenzie’s Annual Awards Ceremony & Musical has become one of Chicago’s most anticipated gospel celebrations — and its open-door policy is no accident.

“I don’t charge an entry fee because everything is so expensive,” Bishop McKenzie explained to 3:16 Magazine.

“This event is free because everyone is invited to hear the best talent in the entertainment industry.”

The house was packed, the energy was electric, and the talent on stage more than delivered on that promise.

A Night of Extraordinary Performances

Masterfully emceed by Janet Harris-Sutton, who kept the evening flowing with grace and enthusiasm, the ceremony showcased some of the finest gospel voices in Chicago and beyond. Featured musical guests included Darius Brooks & The Tommies, Dennis Cole & GMAC, James Cutts, Calvin Bridges, B.J. McKenzie, Cliff Dubose & Divine, and Pastor Derail Smith & The Cosmopolitan.

Performance after performance left the audience in awe — a room full of worshippers on their feet, moved by music that reminded them why gospel has always been the soul of the community.

Honoring a Legend

The evening’s most poignant moment came when gospel icon Pastor Mitty Collier was presented with an award in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to the gospel music community. A true legend, Pastor Collier’s presence alone was a blessing to everyone in the room.

The 12th Annual Awards Ceremony & Musical proved once again that the best things in life — and in Chicago gospel — do not have to cost a thing. Bishop McKenzie continues to set the standard for what community celebration looks like when it is done with purpose, generosity, and a whole lot of talent.
