Chicago Military Ball 2024: The Legacy of Veterans

American Legion Millennium Post 2017 hosted the first Chicago Military Ball on Saturday, November 9, at the prestigious DoubleTree Hotel in Alsip, IL.

The Millennium Post was established in 2017 by Post Commander Wade Hudson. He received a phone call from the Department of Veteran requesting the opening of a new post in the 3rd district. In response, Commander Hudson contacted several former members of the Harold Washington Post, who had been under his leadership.

The event was hosted by Commander Wade, who captivated the audience with his charisma and professionalism. The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with the buzz of conversation among over 350 guests, all of whom savored a sumptuous five-star meal.

The ceremony began with the entrance of guards from all branches of the military, followed by a talented artist playing the harp, electrifying the audience with a variety of musical genres.

Martin Conatser, Past National Commander of the American Legion, remarked that people often only hear clichés and buzzwords, such as “Be all you can be,” when it comes to acknowledging the military. He expressed encouragement regarding the Marines projecting strength around the world, and noted that the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard protect our shores. He believes that 90% of America is unaware of the military’s sacrifices.

“No more than buzzwords and catchphrases,” Martin said. “They don’t understand what it truly means to serve, but we know, and tonight is about honoring those individuals. We have a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made not only by our veterans but also by their families. No matter when you served or what your role in the military was, it changes you for life. You develop a different set of values and a new perspective on life.”

Pam Ray, National Vice President of the American Legion, shared that her husband also has a passion for serving veterans. “Why is that? His father served in the 791st Railroad Operations Battalion in Iran during World War II. He was responsible for delivering weapons and supplies to Russia during the German invasion known as Barbarossa. My husband Butch is currently serving as the Sons of the American Legion Regional Vice Commander, and I am honored that he was able to be here with me this evening. Tomorrow morning, I’ll drop him off at the airport; he’s heading to Washington, D.C., to represent all of the Sons of the American Legion on Veteran’s Day.”

“Today’s event has been invigorating, especially when we recognize the contributions of Korean and World War II veterans who paved the way for all the veterans who followed. I am a post-9/11 veteran, a Persian Gulf veteran, and a Desert Storm veteran. This is the first time Chicago has hosted a military ball for the American Legion. We are making a difference, and this event is just the beginning. It represents a legacy that will continue on forever,” Commander Wade explained.
