The pastor leading the congregation at Cosmopolitan Community Church, located at 5249 S. Wabash in Chicago, IL, is the Reverend Dr. Eric D. Clopton, Sr.

Friends and family celebrated Pastor Clopton’s 9th Pastoral Anniversary at Cosmopolitan Community Church.
“For more than nine years, I’ve faithfully and to the best of my abilities led Cosmopolitan Community Church in the heart of Washington Park/Bronzeville with a spirit of love, compassion, excellence, innovation, and unwavering faith. Cosmopolitan is a hub of hope and transformation, and it’s a place where faith meets community and vision meets purpose. As I reflect on how my faith informs my leadership, the lessons that I have learned and the lasting impact of this ministry and church, I’m humbled and in awe of how the hand of God has been leading and guiding when times were good and when they were not so good.”
Q&A with Pastor Clopton revealed the following.
How does your faith influence your approach to leadership and service? My faith serves as the foundation for every decision and action I take as a leader. It guides me to prioritize compassion, patience, integrity, and vision, ensuring that every member feels valued and heard. Through prayer and reflection, I strive to discern God’s direction not just for myself, but for the entire church community, trusting that with faith as our guide, we can overcome any obstacle and accomplish meaningful, lasting change.
Faith compels me to lead with compassion, integrity, and, even when the path forward isn’t always clear. I believe leadership in God’s house must be Spirit-led, people-centered, and purpose-driven. Every initiative, every sermon, every teaching, and every outreach effort begins with prayer and the belief that God has called us to be both a light in the sanctuary and a voice in the streets. My faith reminds me that the ultimate goal is not just to grow a church but to transform and impact lives through the power of Christ.
What lessons have you learned about leadership through this process? One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that effective leadership requires both humility and resilience. You have to have the courage to lead through change, the grace to listen, and the wisdom to know when to step back and let God move. Leadership also means embracing vulnerability, being willing to learn from failures as well as successes, and recognizing that true influence is measured by the growth and empowerment of others. Each season of ministry has revealed the importance of collaboration and the necessity of trusting God’s timing over my own expectations. By remaining anchored in faith and open to the voices around me, I’ve discovered that the greatest breakthroughs often come from moments of surrender rather than control, and that the legacy of leadership is found not in accolades but in the lives transformed along the journey.
I’ve discovered that leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room but about cultivating other voices, empowering people to see their own God-given potential. Leadership is less about control and more about cultivation. Through every challenge and transition, I’ve learned that growth rarely happens in comfort zones. It comes through stretching, trusting, and staying faithful even when results take time.
True leadership, I’ve learned, is measured not by how many people follow you, but by how many lives are touched and transformed because you followed Christ.
Can you share a success story or moment that encapsulates the impact of your ministry? There have been many powerful moments in ministry, but what stands out most are the stories of transformation when someone who felt forgotten finds, for the first time or again. Under my leadership, I’ve seen people turn and return to church after being away, reconnect with God, and rediscover purpose and God’s love.
During one of our initiatives, a person mentioned to me that it was through our ministry’s encouragement and outreach that they not only returned to church but also found new strength to face life again. That moment reminded me that our work isn’t in vain and that when we pour into people with love, prayer, support, and truth, God brings the increase. Seeing souls restored, minds renewed, and families healed, that’s the real success story of ministry.
Can you share a success story or moment that encapsulates the impact of your church? Cosmopolitan Community Church has always been a place where faith and community meet. One of our greatest successes has been our ability to remain a beacon of hope in Washington Park/ Bronzeville, not only through preaching but through presence.

When the community faced times of hardship, our church responded not with retreat, but with revival. We expanded partnerships, fed families, provided resources, and continued to preach a gospel that speaks to the spirit, soul, body, and the struggle. Our ministry initiatives have reignited a sense of pride and purpose in the neighborhood and beyond, reminding people that God still has work to do here.
What makes me most proud is seeing how our impact extends not just in the church building but beyond the walls of the church — it’s in the lives of young people finding mentorship, families finding stability, and our community finding hope again. Cosmopolitan has become more than a church; it’s a movement of faith, knowledge, restoration, and empowerment.
When asked about the journey so far, Pastor Clopton reflected on the remarkable transformation experienced within the church community. He emphasized the resilience and unity of the congregation, noting how challenges have only strengthened their collective faith and commitment to service. Pastor Clopton expressed deep gratitude for the dedication of church members and leaders who have worked tirelessly alongside him to fulfill God’s vision for Cosmopolitan Community Church.
“As I continue to lead with vision and vitality, this ministry stands as a testament to what faith, focus, and forward-thinking leadership can accomplish. With the help of the Lord and my team, Cosmopolitan Community Church remains a vibrant witness of God’s love, God’s grace, God’s power, and a place where lives are changed, hope is restored, and purpose is rediscovered.”
